* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is occurring.
* WHERE...A portion of west central Maine, including the following
county, Somerset.
* WHEN...Until 500 AM EDT Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Flooding of low-lying and flood-prone locations is
occurring along portions of the Carrabassett River in Somerset
County due to ice jams. Depending on ice behavior, any release of
the ice jam could result in sudden rises of water, leading to a
rapid flooding situation.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 236 PM EDT, Local Fire Services and Emergency management
reported ice jams along the Carrabassett River that are
leading to unexpected water rises. The main concerns are for
low lying portions of Embden to Anson where ice jams have
been reported. The flood threat will continue into the
overnight hours as streamflows will continue to rise from
earlier rain and snowmelt.
- Avoid flooded roads
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Anson, Embden and New Portland.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
Water levels can rise and fall quickly in the vicinity of ice jams.
Those with interests along rivers and tributary streams should be
alert for rapidly fluctuating water levels in the vicinity of ice
jams.
