High/Low Frequency Difference
Posted: 21 Mar 2024 05:30 AM
The featured chart looks into an interesting oddity between high and low temperature frequencies in relation to their climatological daily averages. For Ames, the daily frequency of the high or low temperature being within 5 degrees of average is plotted. For much of the year, outside of March into early April and November, these frequencies are rather close to each other. For these two periods, the difference is rather large, but why? The frequencies for low temperature are higher for these two periods, which indicates that the observed temperature distribution is tighter than that for high temperature. The reason is that low temperature climatology is very close to 32°F during these periods and that temperature value is a sort of "attracter" for overnight temperatures to settle at due to exothermic and endothermic processes associated with the freezing/thawing of water. Another interesting aspect of this chart is that only during summer is the frequency above 50%, which implies that a temperature outside of within +/- 5°F of average is more common than not.
