With the growing season drawing to a close, it is a good time to check in on Growing Degree Day (GDD) accumulations. The featured chart presents this information for the Ames Airport weather station. The envelope of accumulated observations is plotted along with the 2023 and 2024 values. The season to date departure from average is plotted on the lower panel. For GDDs, this year has been a lot like the last year. Of course, the big different this year has been the abundant rainfall throughout much of the season. With just one week of September left and GDDs about 10 days above average (assuming a 20 GDD/day accumulation), it would seem there is zero concern about any early frost this year.
