SVR Warning YTD Ranks

Posted: 07 Jul 2023 05:30 AM

With the calendar year past the midway point and somewhere around the half way point of the convective season, it is a good time to check in on National Weather Service warning metrics as unofficially computed by the IEM! The featured map presents an IEM estimated warning total rank for the year to date period. A value of 1 indicates the fewest number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued since at least 2002 for the given weather forecast office. A value of 22 would indicate the most. Over Iowa, there's a wild juxtaposition between the neighboring La Crosse, WI (ARX) and Davenport, IA (DVN) offices with ARX having the lowest total and DVN near the top. Over the contiguous US, there's certainly a pattern to be seen as the persistent and jammed up upper level flow pattern has kept severe weather out of the northern plains and the northeastern US. While one does not wish to root for more severe weather, the presence of thunderstorms is important for bringing needed precipitation.
