Water Year, Halfway Point

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 05:27 AM

It seems kind of strange to say it, but we are now about halfway through the "water year" which starts on 1 October. One of the driest locations in the state over this period is Sioux City, but recent precipitation events have helped the accumulation total. The featured chart presents the accumulated precipitation totals to date for the water year with the envelope of observations shown by the tan area and the NCEI climatology with the dashed black line. This year's total in red shows the recent up-tick and values now not too far from average. The steepening of the climatology line tells a good story as well with each day increasing our expectations for rainfall amounts and thus it becomes easier to make up deficits as daily rainfalls increase as well as quickly increase deficits without rainfall as climatology zooms higher.
