Reaching 100 Degrees

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 08:32 PM

The forecast for Thursday is a scorcher in Iowa with high temperatures expected in the triple digits for a good portion of western Iowa. Reaching the century mark is not something seen each year in Iowa and tomorrow's temperatures statewide may be the warmest seen since 2012. The featured chart presents the number of days each year with a daily high temperature of at least 100 degrees for Shenandoah (far southwestern Iowa). For this COOP site, the last 100 degree temperature appears to have been back in 2013. A simple long term trend line is fit to the plot and the influence of the dust bowl years is readily apparent. The recent lack of rainfall will certainly help boost temperatures as the sun's energy more efficiently heats the ground without having to evaporate water. Very warm air just above the surface greatly helps boosts temperatures as well.
