Awaiting Summer

Posted: 19 May 2021 05:48 AM

Very warm weather has been somewhat illusive this spring season, but at least temperatures this week have been comfortably above freezing. We are already half way through May and depending on how you count the start of summer, we only have a few weeks of spring left! The featured chart presents one such means to compute the start of summer whereby the start date of the warmest consecutive 90 day period each year is plotted with a simple linear trend fit to the data for Des Moines. The simple average is shown to be June 8th, but a few summers in the past have already gotten started by this date given this metric. The forecast has some hope for the warm weather we need arriving by the end of the week and sticking around until next week.
