SWAW 2021: Flooding

Posted: 26 Mar 2021 05:35 AM

The final topic for Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa is flooding. While not as "exciting" as severe thunderstorms producing hail or tornadoes, the same storms often also produce intense rainfall that leads to flash (ephemeral) flooding and after many successive storms river flooding. The National Weather Service has a number of products and alerts that attempt to cover the various aspects of flooding. The featured screenshot is of the excellent AHPS website which tends to cover the long duration river flood events for monitored forecast points. In Iowa, we are fortunate to have an extensive monitoring network built out by the Iowa Flood Center at the University of Iowa that supplements resources deployed by the USGS and others.
