Isolated Warm Day

Posted: 19 Mar 2020 04:22 AM

The forecast has warm air making its way into the state behind a warm front today with highs in the 60s for some. This warm air will be brief with much colder air plowing in overnight into Friday. So Thursday would be an isolated warm day with highs for the period of days before and after it being much colder. The featured chart attempts to provide some climatology for how wild a one day swing in high temperature can be for Ames. The bars represent the weekly maximum jump up in temperature for one day versus the average temperature over the previous five days and the average temperature over the upcoming three days. For mid-March, the chart shows the upper 20s being about the largest one can expect for maximum difference between these three periods. The negative bars shows the contraposite dips downward with slightly smaller magnitudes possible.
