Light Snow Report Frequency

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 05:34 AM

Light snow is in the forecast for today with not a whole lot for accumulation expected. Of course, the calendar still says early February and so it is no surprise that it is snowing today, but it is still informative to look at the frequency of these light snowfall events. The featured chart presents said frequencies based on the automated and sometimes human observer augmented METAR reports from the Des Moines airport. The chart shows not much difference by hour of day for such reports, but the annual signal is clear. The frequency of such events starts decreasing by mid February as temperatures start to warm and light snowfall events become less common. This does not imply that actual snowfall amounts will decrease as with increasing temperature, powerful spring storm systems can bring higher amounts of moisture allowing for heavier snowfall totals!
