Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:33 AM

While not necessarily as warm as it recently has been, Sunday was yet another recent mild day for Iowa. To show how mild it recently has been, the featured chart displays the coldest temperature over the inclusive date period of 19 December thru 5 January. For Des Moines, the minimum this year was just 21 degrees and the second warmest value on record behind 24 back in 1979. The simple average shown on the plot is negative four degrees, so this year's period is 25 degrees above average for this metric. This metric has been buoyed by the general lack of snow cover for the location, northwestern Iowa has seen much colder temperatures during this period as they have had snow. The forecast has mild weather continuing this week.
