You may have woken up Thursday morning thinking it was going to be a mild day as early morning temperatures were in the 50s for much of the state. That was wishful thinking as the winds switched to the northwest and much colder air spilled into the state dropping temperatures into the 30s for the afternoon hours. The featured chart presents a wind rose when the Ames Airport temperature is at least 50 degrees during the month of November. Such warm temperatures are typically thanks to transport of warmer air masses into the state from our south. Winds from the north do not have as warm of air masses and thus the wind rose shows the very low observed frequencies.
