Sept Wind Freq by Temp

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 05:35 AM

The featured chart displays an interesting relationship of the frequency of having a wind speed of at least 10 knots by air temperature for Des Moines during September. Such sustained winds are typically a sign that the lower atmosphere is well mixed. Such an atmosphere allows warmer air a few 100s to 1000s of feet above the ground is to be mixed to the surface. It is also a sign that the ground is likely being heated, which promotes mixing and transport of higher speed air aloft to the surface. Of course, the relationship is not simple but the featured chart is rather smooth. Today's weather will feature such wind speeds and temperatures into the 80s.
