Change in 90+ degree days

Posted: 08 Jul 2016 05:40 AM

This summer has seen plenty of days with a high temperature over 90 degrees. This is against a long term trend of decreasing number of such days each summer. The featured map compares the number of such days each summer for the 1951-1980 period to the 1981-2010 period. Much of the map shows negative values meaning a decrease in the number of days. A good portion of this negative area resides in the western progression of the corn and soybean belt. The thought is that the intensified agriculture modulates summer time temperatures. You can generate maps like these on demand, so see what trends you can find in the Midwest!
