Frost Free
Posted: 23 Mar 2016 05:37 AM
A mild winter and mostly warm March has left soil temperatures in the state quite warm with
no signs of frost left at any level in the state based on our network of sensors. The
featured chart displays a recent time series of soil temperatures at four depths from the
station at the ISU Agronomy Farm near Ames. The impact of the recent warmth on the
shallow depths is easily seen with the warming now even reaching the deepest depths of 50
inches sensed by the site. Soil temperatures still need to warm further before supporting
the planting of agricultural crops in the state and the calendar still says March, so there is
still plenty of time for colder weather and snowfall, like what's expected today and tomorrow!
