2 inches in November

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:35 AM

On Tuesday, the Moline, IL airport station reported over two inches of precipitation for the date. This is a rather heavy total considering we are now in November! The featured chart presents monthly statistics on the frequency of having a 2+ inch precipitation event during a day of that month. The tan bar represents the percentile rank of a 2+ inch event and the blue bar represents the return interval of such events as expressed by number of years between events. Having a 2+ inch rainfall in November for Moline is a one in 37 year event, so rare indeed. Of course, the frequency and significance of such events decreases during the summer time as the atmosphere is more capable of supporting such heavy rainfall events with higher temperatures supporting more water holding capacity.
